The Golden Fleece (Greek: Χρυσόμαλλον δέρας) was the legendary golden wool from Chrysomallos, a flying ram sent by the cloud nymph Nephele to rescue her children Phrixus and Helle from their stepmother's schemes. After the ram safely delivered Phrixus to Colchis (modern-day Georgia on the Black Sea), Phrixus sacrificed it to Zeus and hung its golden fleece in the sacred grove of Ares, where it was guarded by a sleepless dragon. The quest for this legendary treasure became Greek mythology's greatest adventure when Jason of Iolcus assembled the Argonauts - including Heracles, Orpheus, Castor and Pollux, and Atalanta - to sail aboard the ship Argo and retrieve it. According to Apollonius of Rhodes in his epic Argonautica, the quest spanned perilous seas, impossible trials, and the aid of the powerful sorceress Medea, whose love for Jason would change mythology forever.
The quest began when Jason's uncle Pelias usurped the throne of Iolcus that rightfully belonged to Jason. When Jason came of age and demanded his birthright, Pelias sent him on what seemed an impossible mission: retrieve the Golden Fleece from distant Colchis. Jason gathered the greatest heroes of his generation - Heracles for strength, Orpheus for music that could charm nature itself, the swift huntress Atalanta, the divine twins Castor and Pollux, and approximately 50 others - aboard the miraculous ship Argo, built with timber from the sacred grove of Dodona's oracle oak.
Upon reaching Colchis, King Aeëtes agreed to surrender the Fleece only if Jason could complete three impossible trials: yoke two fire-breathing bronze bulls given by Hephaestus, plow a field and plant dragon's teeth that would sprout into warriors, and retrieve the Fleece from the sleepless dragon. Jason succeeded through the aid of Medea, Aeëtes' daughter, who fell in love with the hero and betrayed her father with magical protection and cunning strategy. The quest's triumphant return became tragedy when Jason later abandoned Medea, leading to one of Greek mythology's most dramatic tales of love, betrayal, and vengeance that resonates alongside stories of Helen of Troy and Odysseus' trials.
