Dedicated to Hephaestus, the god of fire, metalworking, and craftsmanship, and Athena Ergane (Athena of the Workers), this Doric peripteral temple is the best-preserved ancient Greek temple in the world, with its structure, columns, and roof still largely intact. Designed in a similar style to the Parthenon but predating it slightly, the temple features elaborate sculptural decoration including metopes depicting the Labors of Heracles and Theseus. Its exceptional preservation is attributed to its conversion into a Christian church in the 7th century CE, which protected it from destruction for over 1,400 years.
