The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, reportedly constructed in the ancient city of Babylon (near modern-day Hillah, Iraq) during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar II (r. 605-562 BCE) of the Neo-Babylonian Empire. According to ancient Greek historians including Strabo and Diodorus Siculus, these gardens consisted of vaulted terraces raised one above another, planted with trees and flowering plants, creating a mountain-like artificial paradise rising approximately 75 feet high. Legend attributes their construction to Nebuchadnezzar's desire to please his wife Amytis of Media, who longed for the green hills and valleys of her homeland. Despite extensive archaeological excavations at Babylon, no definitive physical evidence of the gardens has been found, leading some scholars to suggest they may have been located in Nineveh (Assyria) or were a mythical conflation of various Mesopotamian palace gardens.
